Angela Wals

Meet Angela - our member of the month in December!

Introduction round: Who are you and where are you from?
My name is Angela Wals (30) and I'm Dutch.

What made you come to Berlin?
It began with a simple idea: Let's live somewhere else in the world for a while. Why not take advantage of this globalized world we live in, right? LA, Buenos Aires and New York were also on the shortlist. But Berlin was by far the best option, considering I have a toddler who wants to run around, preferably in green and clean parks, without being run over. Berlin is easily the most child friendly city I have ever visited. Also important: Berlin has a very friendly environment for freelancers, because it's affordable. Both my boyfriend and I are self employed.

What exactly do you do? What's in the pipeline for the near future?
I'm a journalist and mainly write long stories for a Dutch (left wing) newspaper: de Volkskrant. I write about culture and human interest (and sometimes about genocide, because that was my specialty during my History Studies).

Since when do you cowork at Office Club Berlin?
Basically since I moved here: last May.

What is the benefit of using a coworking space for you?
I'm a social animal. Working alone demotivates me: I will always find excuses to get distracted. I'm way more productive if I have a workplace to go to. And I've already met so many nice Office Clubbers. I find they are a very friendly and interesting kind of species.
Which questions / problems could you help your coworking neighbour with?
Ignore me completely when you have a technological question - ask the dozen wiz kids we have at the office instead. You recognize them by their big screens with matrix numbers on them. But if you have the problem "I’m hungry and don’t know where to eat in the neighborhood": I can definitely help you with that. And if the very rare occasion occurs that you need to know a Dutch word: Tap on my shoulder. Oh, and I’m a kick ass researcher, I can always help to find stuff.

Do you have favourite spots in Berlin? Something to recommend / consider especially for people coming here?
I only experienced a full summer. But Volkspark Friedrichshain is my favorite park to chill. And for my fellow office workers: The best yellow curry is just across the street: Thuy Nga.

Thanks a lot and all the best to you, Angela!
