Sarah D'haen

Meet Sarah - our member of the month in February!

Introduction round: Who are you and where are you from?
Hi all, nice to meet. Sarah here, Belgian, originally from near Brussels and a native Flemish speaker. After having lived in London and Copenhagen for a while, I ended up in Berlin 6.5 years ago and will likely stay for a long time still.

What made you come to Berlin?
My husband got offered a job here and we decided to move with our little son. I initially kept my job in Copenhagen, and commuted on a weekly basis, but after the arrival of our daughter we thought that this was becoming a bit too crazy. So I found myself a fitting job in Berlin. Meanwhile we are pretty anchored here, with our kids in kita and school around the corner, and many lovely friends throughout the city.

What exactly do you do? What's in the pipeline for the near future?
I am an academic researcher, and work on topics related to global land use change, livelihoods, and impacts and adaptation to climate change. Most of what I do is focused on Sub-Saharan Africa, where I often work with civil servants from national environment ministries, as well as with national researchers and other stakeholders. Over the past 3.5 years, I led a scientific capacity building project in West-Africa, and travelled frequently to Benin, Senegal and Burkina Faso. The project ended in November. I am now taking a short break, to catch up with academic research in my field, and to look for a new professional challenge.

Since when do you cowork at Office Club Berlin Prenzlauer Berg?
I came to test the office a couple of times in October, and then started coming more frequently since December.

What is the benefit of using a coworking space for you?
Compared to working from home, working from an office environment allows me to make a clear distinction between work time and personal time, improving the quality of both. I chose the Office Club because of its big windows, letting in plenty of natural light, and the size of the space, accommodating a good amount of people without feeling crowded.

Which questions / problems could you help your coworking neighbour with?
I am good at strategising and planning, especially when it comes to (research) projects with stakeholders, surveys, or (scientific) capacity building. I am gladly up for a chat or lunch, just come say hi.

Do you have favourite spots in Berlin? Something to recommend / consider especially for people coming here?
For me, Tempelhofer Freiheit is something any visitor should see and experience. I find myself having to go every so often, just to sit and stare over the wide space from the Neukolln side. The Schillerkiez behind it is perfect for a cosy dinner or good coffee afterwards. Ususally I take visitors on a longer walk connecting Gleisdreieck park, Viktoriapark and Tempelhofer Freiheit. Teufelsberg and around is another place where you will find me at least once a year, out for a walk on a sunny day. Finally, visitors really should try some of the clubs. Sisyphos is my favourite one...

Thanks a lot and all the best to you!
